2014 World Series of Poker: 65-Event WSOP Schedule Released

WSOPIt’s that time again, poker-playing friends, when World Series of Poker officials release the full schedule for the seven weeks of poker tournament fun generally known as the WSOP.

Bits and pieces of this year’s 65-event schedule have already been announced, including a $10,000,000 guarantee for the winner of this year’s main event, plus matching “Big One” and “Little One” charity events in the days preceding the main event, both of which go to benefit poker benefactor Guy Laliberte’s One Drop clean-water charity.

Each year, the WSOP tries a few new ideas, and at first glance, here are some of this year’s new wrinkles and special twists:

  • Only three starting days for this year’s Main Event, down from four in recent previous years;
  • A “Monster Stack” NLHE $1,500 event, which is slated to run for four days instead of the three used for most other events;
  • A new “Dealer’s Choice” event with a wide number of games that can be selected.  Look for this one to have some moderate dealer issues due to inexperience;
  • A tweaking in the start times for the second events in days where multiple events occur, bumped up from 5pm to 4pm;
  • An early-morning 10am start for the Seniors tourney (50 and over) on June 6th.  The new “Millionaire Maker” $1,500 NLHE event on May 27th, previously announced, has an 11am start.  Those appear to be the only two morning start times on the schedule.

A few other recent innovations worked well enough to be retained, such as the 90% discount for women in the Ladies Event, which is nominally priced at $10,000 but is really a $1,000 event for the girls, but had been plagued by male entrants until last year.  The Ladies, Seniors and Casino Employees tourneys remain the only three events that aren’t generally open (or welcome) for all players.

Despite the widest distribution of poker variations, one newly popular game remains missing: Open Faced Chinese.  It’s likely due to the fact that WSOP officials haven’t yet developed a way to implement a rising-blind structure that would trim the field down in a workable amount of time.  Maybe next year….

We’ll check back in shortly to review general player reactions to the new schedule, and to see if any of the new gimmicks create unforeseen complications.  It’s looking to be a long, busy summer at the Rio, the busiest one yet.

For those of you who find the schedule as printed at the WSOP’s official site a bit cumbersome, here’s an alternate version, stripped down to the basics:
