GPL Week 3: New York Regains First Place, Paris Stays Put

We’re on to Week 4 in the first season of the Global Poker League, but before the matches start on Tuesday, let’s take a look at what happened during Week 3. We’re still at the point of the season during which the standings can change easily, as there isn’t as much separation between the teams as there will be later. On the Eurasia side, there was actually very little movement in the standings as the Paris Aviators remained in third place, but in the Americas Conference, three pairs of teams switched places in the standings, with the New York Rounders re-taking possession of first place.

GPL Eurasia Conference Week 3 – Sit-and-Go 1

1st Place – Moscow Wolverines, Andrey Pateychuk – 7 points
2nd Place – Rome Emperors, Max Pescatori – 5 points
3rd Place – Hong Kong Stars, Raiden Kan – 3 points
4th Place – London Royals, Liv Boeree – 2 points
5th Place – Berlin Bears, Daniel Cates – 1 points
6th Place – Paris Aviators, Fabrice Soulier – 0 points

GPL Eurasia Conference Week 3 – Sit-and-Go 2

1st Place – London Royals, Liv Boeree – 7 points
2nd Place – Hong Kong Stars, Weiyi Zhang – 5 points
3rd Place – Moscow Wolverines, Andrey Pateychuk – 3 points
4th Place – Rome Emperors, Max Pescatori – 2 points
5th Place – Paris Aviators, Fabrice Soulier – 1 points
6th Place – Berlin Bears, Daniel Cates – 0 points

GPL Vertical card logoThe Moscow Wolverines remained in third place, but they were the biggest points-earners of the week, garnering 16 points across the two Sit-and-Go’s and one heads-up match. Andrey Pateychuk captured first- and third-place finishes in the Sit-and-Go rounds to bank 10 points, while Sergey Lebedev took two out of three games from the Rome Emperors’ Timothy Adams to earn the other 6 points.

On the down side, for the second time in two weeks, Daniel Cates struggled mightily for the Berlin Bears. In Week 1, he finished dead last in both Sit-and-Go’s and was then only able to garner three points in his heads-up match, resulting in Berlin starting out in the basement of the Eurasia Conference standings. Berlin bounced back a bit in Week 2 behind Dominik Nitsche, moving up one spot to fifth place, but Cates returned for Week 3 to nearly the same results he had in Week 1. In the Sit-and-Go rounds, he finished fifth and sixth for 1 point and then lost two of three to the Hong Kong Stars’ Randy Lew to end up with just 4 points total, sending Berlin back to last place. Rough start to the season for him, but it happens.

Side note: Berlin is the only team to have played the same player in both the Sit-and-Go’s and the heads-up match each week (Cates twice, Nitsche once).

GPL Americas Conference Week 3 – Sit-and-Go 1

1st Place – New York Rounders, Tyler Kenney – 7 points
2nd Place – Sao Paolo Mets, Felipe Mojave – 5 points
3rd Place – Montreal Nationals, Mike McDonald – 3 points
4th Place – Las Vegas Moneymakers, Jonathan Duhamel – 2 points
5th Place – LA Sunset, Eugene Katchalov – 1 points
6th Place – San Francisco Rush, Anton Wigg – 0 points

GPL Americas Conference Week 3 – Sit-and-Go 2

1st Place – Sao Paolo Mets, Felipe Mojave – 7 points
2nd Place – New York Rounders, Tyler Kenney – 5 points
3rd Place – San Francisco Rush, Anton Wigg – 3 points
4th Place – Las Vegas Moneymakers, Jake Cody – 2 points
5th Place – LA Sunset, Maria Ho – 1 points
6th Place – Montreal Nationals, Mike McDonald – 0 points

In the Americas Conference, both the New York Rounds and Sao Paolo Mets scored 15 points, thanks to their Sit-and-Go representatives. New York’s Tyler Kenney and Sao Paolo’s Felipe Mojave trade first and second place finishes in the Sit-and-Go’s to each earn 12 points for their teams. Unfortunately, their teammates couldn’t do better than 3 points each in their heads-up matches, or these teams would have really soared in Week 3. Regardless, it was enough to get New York back into first place, while Sao Paolo jumped from last place into a tie with the LA Sunset for fourth.

Heads-Up Matches

Hong Kong Stars (Randy Lew) 6, Berlin Bears (Daniel Cates) 3
Paris Aviators (George Danzer) 9, London Royals (Igor Kurganov) 0
Moscow Wolverines (Sergey Lebedev) 6, Rome Emperors (Timothy Adams) 3

Las Vegas Moneymakers (Jonathan Little) 6, Sao Paolo Mets (Joao Bauer) 3
San Francisco Rush (Faraz Jaka) 6, LA Sunset (Eugene Katchalov) 3
Montreal Nationals (Pascal Lefrancois) 6, New York Rounders (Bryn Kenney) 3
